Over the past year I pinned a few different recipes to make my own taco seasoning. I REALLY wanted to do it, but I never planned ahead or checked the spices we had in the cabinet. So I always ended up just buying the packaged taco seasoning mix that wasn't 100% spices and had extra junk in there. Here's the ingredient list from Ortega Taco Seasoning Mix.
Lots of extras including carmel color? WHY?!
So on Monday I finally checked our spice cabinet and compared to the recipe on Real Fit, Real Food Mom's blog. I was only missing 1 spice! So I bought that one spice at the grocery store. Yes buying that 1 spice was more expensive than buying a $1 taco seasoning mix, but I also got the organic version of the spice, have enough homemade taco seasoning for probably 10 more taco dinners AND have more of the organic spice left for other recipes. I think it was the best decision :)
On to the recipe! (adapted slightly from Real Fit, Read Food Mom)
- 4 Tbsp Chili Powder
- 4 Tsp Ground Cumin
- 4 Tsp Salt
- 2 Tsp Paprika
- 1 Tsp Garlic Powder
- 1 Tsp Onion Powder
- 1/2 Tsp Dried Oregano
- 1/2 Tsp Cayenne Pepper
Combine all of your spices. Whisk until mixed well.
To Use When Making Tacos:
Brown 1 lb of ground beef. I buy grass fed beef, usually from the grocery store. I haven't started buying from a farmer's market or farm yet. Look for lean meat (90% or higher if you can find it). Drain out any fat. Return meat to pan, add 1/4 cup of water and 2 Tbsp of your taco seasoning. Mix together until seasoning and water are absorbed.
Enjoy your delicious tacos without any weird ingredients/chemicals in your seasoning! Next step for me is to make my own tortillas...
