Yesterday I ran my first 10k race! There was also a 3 mile race and a walk. I actually had this race on my calendar for the 3 mile race, but thanks to training with Team Challenge I was ready for the 10k!
Tortoise and Hare
Lions Park, Salisbury MA
Entry Fee: $30, $35 Race Day (10k Fee)
This race is 100% a fundraiser for the Salisbury Parks & Rec Department
Parking: There was plenty of parking in the lots for the Senior Center and Lions Park.
Registration: There were lots of signs pointing runners inside the Senior Center to find registration. Once inside, there were friendly workers and was no line at all. The only issue was that the race T-shirts did not come in on time for the race. They offered to mail you your shirt or you could come pick it up next week.
Facilities: Lions Park was a nice place for everyone to spread out and get warmed up without being cramped on top of each other. There were no Porta Potties as there was a small building at the park already, but unfortunately there were only two stalls and it wasn't very clean.
Course: The first 1.5 miles were on the Ghost Trail, which is a rail trail, and back roads, which was nice. Then we went onto Rt 1 and Rabbit Rd for 2-3 miles, which are really heavily traveled roads. I wish that section could have been run on a less busy street, but there were cones set up for the runners' safety. Then we went back onto the Ghost Trail for the last 2 miles. There were a few volunteers at every turn we had to take and at each water stop (mile marker 2 and 4.5). There was no getting lost with everyone to direct you and cheer you on.
Post-Race: There was water, Gatorade, bananas, oranges, PowerGel GU and pizza for racers to enjoy post-race. They had an MC and music and the race results were taped up to the building by the time I was done stretching.
Overall Review: I will definitely be back to this race! I love community races that are smaller and the supportive energy definitely outweighs the not so great bathrooms. Plus I will have to return to see how I do on the same course a year a later.
Hi, I'm Jessie!
I live in NH with my husband and our pups. My favorite things are coaching Girls on the Run, eating good food that I didn't have to cook, helping other people work on their health, volunteering for and running races, watching tv, doing yoga, and spending too much time on social media. #Balance
